The straight drive is hit with a full vertical bat, back past the bowler, to an overpitched ball on or around the stumps. The whole shot hangs on two things: your head coming forward over the ball before the bat swings, and the bat face staying straight through contact. If those two happen, the ball beats mid-on and mid-off before they move.
Length is the trigger, not line. You want a ball that's overpitched — a half-volley or close to it — on the stumps or just outside off. A good-length ball played like a half-volley is how you nick off or chip to mid-off, so if you're not sure it's full enough, defend it and wait.
Everything good in the straight drive starts before the swing.
Head falling to leg. Your head drifts leg-side, the bat has to come around your front pad, and the drive turns into a closed-face push toward mid-on. Fix the head and the bat path fixes itself.
Hitting at the ball rather than through it. Hands fire out ahead of the body, contact happens too far in front, and the ball lifts to mid-off. Wait — the ball comes to you under your eyes.
No stride. Reaching with the hands from the crease leaves a gap between bat and pad, and the drive becomes an edge waiting to happen.
Almost always: contact is too far in front of your head, or your weight stayed on the back foot. Get your head forward over the ball and meet it under your eyes — the ball goes down because your head is over the top of it.
Direction. The straight drive goes back past the bowler and the stumps at the far end; the on drive is the same swing to a ball angling at your pads, hit between the bowler and mid-on. The on drive needs the head slightly further inside the line — it's genuinely the harder shot.
Good-length balls, and anything short of that. If the ball can bounce above knee height at contact, driving it on the up is a percentage error at club level — leave the drive for the overpitched ball.
